Netherlands women’s national football team coach Sarina Wiegman said that she was hoping for her team to have a positive influence on girls to become football players and coaches in the future, speaking at a press conference in Lyon on Saturday, on the eve of the 2019 Women’s World Cup final against team USA.

«The most significant thing for me now is that we are in the final and that we want to win the final. And I hope that more and more women will play football and will become coaches. And we have to mark that, influence that positively,» said Wiegman.

The Netherlands coach also said that striker Lieke Martens’ participation in the final is still uncertain, as she was coming back from an injury.

In closing, Wiegman praised the USA team, but added that her squad will also have their chances.

«We want to surprise the USA, they have a very strong team with lots of qualities and skills, but they have struggled as well, and they have some luck as well which is needed if you get to the final during the World Cup. We will have a hard time, I think, but we will definitely have opportunities to get through them and to make that goal,» said Wiegman.

The 2019 Women’s World Cup final is due to be played at the Parc Olympique Lyonnais in Lyon on Sunday. The kickoff is set at 16:00 GMT.
